Projects with Coffee Table and Side Table
Coffee Table in Red
The starting point
After sanding the unit was dyed using Mann’s furniture dyes using red and a hint of yellow. The piece of Kimorra® veneer in the door is the crucial component bringing the piece to life. The style use is ref GA897 which is slightly transparent pink/red shade with golden stripes running through it.
Side Table with Kimorra cut outs
It starts as 1 item in a lot of 3 bought at auction It’s stripped and sanded down A highly diluted orange wood stain is mixed as we want to keep the grain showing through Cut outs from Kimorra cut by hand And, inserted before fixing down with an epoxy coating After tidying up and varnishing It looks much warmer in colour and the copper lifts the overall effect
This was quite time consuming due to getting the carved out areas stripped of polish and cutting out the Kimorra® inserts by hand. But, well worthwhile at the end! We have again used Mann’s furniture dyes to give the piece a warmth that it didn’t have before. We applied the stain very diluted so we didn’t overdo the colour and overpower the piece. The wood itself had a nice grain and we wanted to enhance that but in a subtle way. We applied a sticky backed label paper to the Kimorra® so we could mark on it the shapes we needed to cut out. Cutting Kimorra is easy with scissors because it is generally around 0.2 mm thick but it’s durability is outstanding due to it being essentially a fabric encased in epoxy resin. We used an epoxy resin to overcoat the Kimorra® in this case and then the whole piece was varnished to seal everything up.
